You have no doubt seen or heard the commercials: "Where does depression hurt? EVERYWHERE. Who does depression hurt? EVERYONE." Mental illnesses can consume you, take over your entire life and hurt everyone around you if you let it. I am no exception.

My life feels like I am stuck riding on a rollercoaster in the middle of a hurricane. I have ups and downs, and I have left a path of destruction in my wake. My sanity dangles on a tiny fragile string, and through this blog I am giving the world a look into my broken mind and my unstable life.

In the end, I am just a girl trying to maintain my sanity in a candy-coated world of misery. Here you'll get a glimpse at just how true those commercials are. Keep your arms and legs inside the blog at all times, hold on tight, and prepare yourself for a very bumpy ride ...

30 Days of truth about me - Day 8

Day 8 of 30 Days of Truth About Me

Day 08 → Someone who made your life hell, or treated you like shit.

I'm sure my answer to this one is totally obvious. My exhusband made my life hell for almost 5 years and treated me like shit 99 percent of the time. He was verbally and physically abusive. He was (and still is) a horrible person. He beat the hell out of me for no good reason (there's never a good reason). He even slit open my wrist once with a piece of a broken mirror. He pulled out my hair. He sprayed combustible liquid all over me and then tried to light me on fire with a match. He threw things, including furniture, at me. And that's all just the stuff I publicly talk about. There are more things that I can't bring myself to say to anyone. I've turned him into the law a bunch of times, and he's never really been punished for what he did. He got 6 months of probation and a small fine once, but that's it.

30 Days of truth about me - Day 7

Day 7 of 30 Days of Truth About Me

Day 07 → Someone who has made your life worth living for.

I'd have to say a someone who isn't even a person. My dog Oreo has made my life worth living for. When I got him a few years ago, I was severely depressed and felt like I had nothing worth living for. I felt like I had no purpose. I didn't care to live. My therapist recommended that I get a pet to help give me a purpose. I found Oreo on Petfinder.com as a 10 week old puppy who was found walking along a freeway and was rescued by this small independent pet rescue group. He instantly gave me a purpose because he couldn't live without my help. He showed me unconditional love, which I needed. He also provided me with laughs because he was a goofy puppy. He also is the most compassionate animal I've ever seen. All this time later, I still have never regretted the decision to get a dog. He has truly saved my life.

30 Days of truth about me - Day 6

Day 6 of 30 Days of Truth About Me

Day 06 → Something you hope you never have to do.

I hope I never again have to make a police report after someone has abused me / tried to kill me. My exhusband was so bad that I was calling 911 almost every day for months, and the police had come to know me personally and all knew my story because they were always at my house. I don't ever want to do that again

Ten Anyone? Meme

Monday Mayhem - #40 ~ Ten Anyone? Meme

3. Name 4 of the best fiction books you've read.

"Prozac Nation," "Cruel Intentions," "August Rush," "Girl Interrupted" and "The Virgin Suicides"

6. If you could change your name what would it be?

7. Tell us a unique and interesting fact about yourself.

8. What do you love best about yourself?
My ability to twist any comment into something dirty

9. If you had a "Freaky Friday" experience, who would you change places with?
I just watched the 2003 remake of that movie with Lindsay Lohan Sunday on TV. Anyways, I'd have to say a man, any man, just so I could know what sex is like from the other side of things

10. What is the best thing about being a woman.
Having boobs ... well actually, I guess I know some men who have them too, so that's not exclusively about being a woman anymore

30 Days of truth about me - Day 5

Day 5 of 30 Days of Truth About Me

Day 05 → Something you hope to do in your life.

I want to one day get married for a second time and actually have it be a good marriage that will last this time. I am sick of having this horrible image of marriages being bad because of my abusive exhusband and because of how bad my parents' marriage was.

4 post secret cards that I love

I was so sad Saturday night because this week's Post Secret cards didn't get posted early. I had to wait until this morning to see them. These are the four cards that I love.

30 Days of truth about me - Day 4

Day 4 of 30 Days of Truth About Me

Day 04 → Something you have to forgive someone for.

Some day I need to figure out a way to forgive my older brother for siding with my father when my parents split up in 2004, even though my father cheated on my mom and abused us all throughout our lives. It really hurt my mom to have my older brother defend my father's cheating on her because "men have needs." Yeah, that's what he said to her. Well, he said that and also that my mom obviously wasn't giving him enough sex to fulfill him so he had to seek it out somewhere else. WHO SAYS THAT? I mean seriously? Maybe one day I'll forgive him for hurting my mom like that, but I know she hasn't forgiven him and she still hurts because of it all, so it's hard for me to forgive

I can hear it clearly in my head, but for the life of me I can't remember who sang it or what the name of the song is. I got a free demo cd for the singer when I was in high school and lost it at some point. The singer never made it famous, and I can't find the song anywhere online. 30 Days of truth about me - Day 3

Day 3 of 30 Days of Truth About Me

Day 03 → Something you have to forgive yourself for.

I need to forgive myself for my past mistakes concerning relationships and sex. When the borderline personality disorder was in control of my behaviors, I had a bunch of one night stands and other sexual relationships that should have never happened. I regret it all. I am pretty hard on myself sometimes for what I did in the past, but in reality it wasn't me ... or at least not the me that I am now. It was basically a whole different personality doing it.

Just Like Me

Saturday 9: Just Like Me

1. Who in your life do you think behaves and thinks the most like you do?
My younger brother... only he truly shares my warped sense of humor

Not that I recall. Normally if I got in trouble, I did do it

3. What about as an adult, were you ever wrongly accused for something you didn't do?? Do you think it's worse to be accused as a child or an adult? Why/why not?
My exhusband always accused me of cheating on him. I was faithful for over 4 years and he kept accusing me. Finally I decided if I was going to get accused for it and get beaten for my so-called affairs, I might as well cheat, so I cheated finally

3. What’s the scariest weather situation you’ve experienced?
One spring, when I was 9 or 10, there were 19 tornadoes in one night in my county. My town was surrounded

4. If you could wake up tomorrow morning in another country, where would you want to be and why?

Project 365 - photo 197 ... Finding happiness within

Apparently I've been looking for happiness in all the wrong places. I should have been looking inside milkshake cups at Marble Slab Creamery ....

Putting stress on a mental conveyor belt?

I just picked up October's issue of "Shape" magazine, and there is a "30-second tip" to put an end to emotional eating that just floored me. It says:

"The next time stress has you reaching for chips or chocolate, try this trick: Put your negative feelings on a mental conveyor belt and watch them go away. 'It helps you let go of whatever's bothering you,' says Edie Goldbacher, Ph.D., a researcher at Temple University's Center for Obesity Research and Education. As you see the anxiety vanish, so will your candy craving."

Does that kind of thing actually help anyone?

I've had therapists say stuff like that to me a lot in the past and I dismiss it. Most of my emotional eating comes from stress at my job. If I really tried to put all my job stress on a mental conveyor belt, I would be throwing everything on that so-called belt. I would then watch everything ride away then go crashing to the floor at the end of the belt and feel bad about it so I would want to go catch it all before it hit the floor.

So it would end up like the episode of "I Love Lucy" where the conveyor belt starts going too fast and they can't keep up with it. My belt would be so backed up on both ends that my productivity would come to a crashing halt because I couldn't keep up with everything going onto and coming off the belt at rapid speed.

30 Days of truth about me - Day 2

Day 2 of 30 Days of Truth About Me

Day 02 → Something you love about yourself.

I love the fact that my mom taught me to be really frugal with money and figure out ways to get things I want for free or really cheap. Somehow, I'm not sure how, she was able to figure out how to support a five-member family on a single income -- a $32,000 a year teacher's salary. I have no clue how she did it.

I used to be mad at her when I was young because I never had the cool toys that everyone else had and I never got to go to summer camps like all of my friends because my parents couldn't afford it. My mom figured out a monthly grocery budget of less than $200, and somehow with sales and coupons, she stuck to it. Even 20 years ago, I don't know how she fed 5 people on $200 a month.

Anyways, watching her do that all my life really made me respect money. I learned not to waste money on frivolous things. Now, I have a great ability to get free/cheap items and live a fairly comfortable life. I clip coupons, I watch sales, and I get tons of stuff for little to no money. When I go grocery shopping, I can get $60 or more worth of groceries and pay around $10. I'm not as good as many of the "coupon queens" you see on the news. I still have a lot to learn, but I'm getting better.

I use online forums for coupon clippers/sale seekers to help figure out where and when to shop. I can't imagine how awesome my mom would have been back then if she had the internet to help her like I do now.

Bob Dylan

Here's Rock 'n Roll Fridays! Today we picked Bob Dylan

1. TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN’ “And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’ for the loser now will be later to win, For the times they are a changin.’” What would you do or play at a Casino?
I've never been in a casino, which is probably a very good thing. I like going to arcades and I can blow through $30 in 20 minutes one quarter at a time on skiball games, so I'm sure if I was in a casino and started playing on the slot machines, I'd blow through all my money within an hour

2. ON DESOLATION ROW “To her, death is quite romantic, She wears an iron vest. Her profession’s her religion, her sin is her lifelessness.” What was the worst job you ever had?
Working as a "sandwich technician" at Subway. I worked there for 6 hours and decided I had enough and never went back

3. DON’T THINK TWICE IT’S ALLRIGHT “I ain’t sayin you treated me unkind, you could have done better but I don’t mind. You just kinda wasted my precious time. Don’t think twice it’s all right,” How do you waste your time besides memes?
Sleeping and watching tons of TV

Good sense of humor, open minded, Christian, patient, able to put up with my insanity

5. JUST LIKE A WOMAN “She takes just like a woman, yes she does, she makes love just like a woman, yes she does, and she aches just like a woman, but she breaks just like a little girl.” What woman would make a great president?
Nancy Grace, she's such a bitch, but also has a soft side. She wouldn't take any shit from anyone, but can be sympathetic to people who need it

6. KNOCKIN ON HEAVEN’S DOOR “Mama put my guns in the ground I can’t shoot them anymore, that long black cloud is comin’ down, I feel like I’m knockin’ on Heaven’s door.” Have you ever fired a rifle, handgun or other firearm?
Does a watergun count? How about a gun that shoots marshmallows?

7. LIKE A ROLLING STONE “You used to laugh about everybody that was hangin’ out, Now you don’t seem so proud, about havin’ to scrounge for your next meal.” Have you ever been on Welfare (the Dole), or collected Unemployment Insurance Benefits?
No, but when I was a kid, my parents had us on the reduced lunch program at school

8. MAGGIE’S FARM “Everybody says she’s the brains behind Pa, She’s 68 but says she’s 24.” When was the last time you lied about your age?
I can't remember ever lying about my age even once

9. MR TAMBORINE MAN “Hey Mr Tamborine Man, play a song for me, I’m not sleepy and there is no place I’m goin’ to."  Have you ever played a musical instrument?
I used to play the clarinet and bass clarinet in my school band, but I quit once I was 15 because it wasn't "cool" to be in the school band

10. ONE MORE CUP OF COFFEE “One more cup of coffee for the road. One more cup of coffee ‘for I go…to the valley below.” What brand of coffee do you drink and how do you take it?
The only coffee I'll drink is a white chocolate mocha from Starbucks, and that's only a few times a year. Normally I just opt for soda to get my caffeine

11. ONE TOO MANY MORNINGS “Down the street the dogs are barkin’, and the day is getting’ dark. As the night comes in a fallin, The dogs ‘ll lose their bark.” When was the last time a dog barked near you?
A few minutes ago. My dogs bark a lot

12. SUBTERRANEAN HOMESICK BLUES “Look out kid, don’t matter what you did. Walk on your tip toes, don’t try NO DOZ, better stay away from those.” When you have to stay awake what do you do when you are very sleepy?
Lots and lots of soda

13. TANGLED UP IN BLUE “I was layin in bed wondrin if she’d changed at all. If her hair was still red…” What color(s) has your hair been?
It's naturally a fairly dark brown, but it's been dyed bright red, a coppery red, blue, purple, pink, green

30 Days of truth about me - Day 1

Day 1 of 30 Days of Truth About Me

Day 01 → Something you hate about yourself.

I really hate how lazy I can be and how much I procrastinate. When I'm in the middle of a depression --- which I've been in for so long now that I can't really remember what it's like to not be depressed --- I'm always so lazy. I never get anything done that I need to do. I always put things off as long as I can possibly put it off. Sometimes I procrastinate too long and things go to crap. Doing housework and mowing the lawn are the things I am laziest about. I hate doing them so I put them off as long as I can. I've even put off mowing so long that it grew to be a few feet high and the city put warnings on my door warning me that they'd fine me if I didn't cut my grass.

Project 365 - photos 195-196

These four books are on my current reading list ... "Wasted" by Marya Hornbacher, "Smashed" by Koren Zailckas, "An Unquiet Mind" by Kay Redfield Jamison and "The Luckiest Girl in the World" by Steven Levenkron

This is a card from my church's current sermon series, "I believe in you"

I've been self-harming again

I've been spending a lot of time and energy lately trying to work on my issues. I am approaching my 29th birthday, and I really want to begin my 30's being much more stable than I've been in my 20's, so I know that I have a lot of work to do in the next year. I've been reading a lot of memoirs and watching movies, which all help me face my issues head-on.

I knew that tackling these problems would be hard, but I never really realized just how hard it would be. I've been examining all my bipolar/borderline tendencies, childhood abuse, abusive marriage, past eating disorders, addictions, etc.

The last few weeks, I think I've actually overdone it. I took it too far. I've been diving hardcore into the eating disorder and self-harm issues lately.

Somehow trying to fix the self-harm problems has triggered me even more. I've started self-harming again. I haven't started cutting... yet ... but I've been picking at myself like crazy. I had an ingrown hair on my right arm a few weeks ago. I dug it out, which caused a small wound. Several times a day since it first scabbed over, I rip off the scab. Every time I do it, it makes the wound bigger. There's also another small wound on the same arm which I don't know the cause of, but I've been picking at it all the time too. I can't stop myself. I don't view it as bad as cutting or burning myself, but it's sort of a gateway form of self-harm. I'm enjoying the pain and sight of blood way too much that I'm afraid I'm on the brink of starting to cut again.

The main thing that's triggered my cutting desire is watching the movie "Painful Secrets" (a.k.a. "Secret Cutting") online the other night. It came out when I was in high school, and it's always been one of my favorite movies. It gives one of the most honest and open looks at cutting that I've ever seen. It's never ever triggered me before, but this time it did. (If you haven't ever watched the movie and want to, it's posted on YouTube in chunks that can be watched back-to-back with a playlist. Click here to watch it. Just know it may trigger you too).

I've also started getting really bad with my eating habits again. I'm so close to an eating disorder again. I go back and forth between starving myself and binge eating. I'm worried about what's ahead.

I think I may have to scale back on the memoir reading and movie watching for a while.

Project 365 - photos 183-194

My boyfriend drew this picture on the paper tablecloth at a fancy Italian restaurant we went to for our six month dating anniversary. He has a Superman obsession... like a big major obsession. And I love cheese, so therefore, he drew Superman with cheese.

I had to have a mold inspector come to the house one day, which meant the dogs had to be locked up in their crates for a while. This is Oreo mad at me for that reason.

For some reason butterflies and moths have decided that the windows near my desk at work are wonderful places to land. I wouldn't think it was weird except for the fact that we're 8 floors up. I don't get what makes them want to fly up that high

This is Pearlz passed out beside me on the couch. We spend a lot of days just being lazy together

One day I was driving all over the Oklahoma City metro doing mystery shops when there was a sudden torrential downpour of rain as I was driving on a freeway

My boyfriend talked me into going to a "Taco Tuesday" event at a local Mexican restaurant, and this lovely painting was above our table

I was really depressed the day I took this puppy photo. I went to my favorite pet store to get some puppy love to cheer myself up

This was a couple days later, still depressed, but different pet store

Another lazy day of laying on the couch with the dogs

I found these wall hangings in a store and liked them, well not even to buy them, but enough to take a photo. I walked around searching for something that would make a cool background. I ended up sitting them down on a furry neon green chair

Inspiration can be found in all sorts of places... even a fake pumpkin at a random store

I loved this cross. If I wasn't so cheap with my spending it would have been hanging on my wall now, but I just took a photo instead
